So let's see if I can link to one of my pbase pictures...

Update:  Nope.  Doesn't work.  Apparently pbase doesn't want to be a picture hosting service.  Just a gallery service.  Oh well.

Czech warns Europe of 'dream world' woes
Vaclav Havel had some pointed comments for the European Union today.
Czech President Vaclav Klaus said Europeans are living in a "dream world" of welfare and long vacations and have yet to realize "they are not moving toward some sort of nirvana."
I especially liked the part about not being able to figure their budget out. I think we have that problem too.

Top 10 Scientific Hoaxes
All of the Top 10 are pretty good. Piltdown man has to be my favorite though. Still unsolved and likely to stay that way.

Ebert's a pretty smart guy.
That was all text Chris's email had in it. And this link. A link to Roger Ebert's review of "Elephant". Ebert writes
Gus Van Sant's "Elephant" is a record of a day at a high school like Columbine, on the day of a massacre much like the one that left 13 dead. It offers no explanation for the tragedy, no insights into the psyches of the killers, no theories about teenagers or society or guns or psychopathic behavior. It simply looks at the day as it unfolds, and that is a brave and radical act; it refuses to supply reasons and assign cures, so that we can close the case and move on.
But the review does more than this. Ebert discusses what he thinks are the real problems. I tried to find some nice "sound bite" quotes to get his point across. I think it's better if you read the whole review and his complete thoughts. And I'd have to say I agree with Ebert. And Chris. Ebert is a pretty smart guy.

Hey! It's Tariq Azziz.
Have you been wondering what Tariq Azziz has been up to? Wonder no longer. A very interesting article on Saddam and the hunt for WMD.

Iraqification: Losing Strategy
Fareed Zakaria, one of my favorite columnists, weighs in with Iraqification: Losing Strategy. And Fareed now has his own web site. Cool!

Pro-Iraq Editorial in the NY Times!?!
In A Burden Too Heavy to Put Down the NY Times makes the case for staying in Iraq. The NY Times? Well, David Brooks actually.

KU Basketball 2003-2004
I had the chance to watch a fair amount of KU's first preseason game against the EA All-Stars tonight. And I have a few observations...
  • It was really odd to watch them play. I didn't realize how much I expected Roy William's style of basketball to be played. Every time KU touched the ball I was thinking "run!". Self's team just moved the ball differently. It was odd.
  • The players didn't look adjusted to it at all. The offense was jerky and uncoordinated. It was painful to watch. I didn't realize how hard it would be to put in a new offensive system. It's going to take a while before the players play instincitvely.
  • KU barely won. Aren't you supposed to clobber the EA All-Stars? KU was that bad. And the EAAS (?) were 16-32 from beyond the arc. The 20' 6" arc. They just didn't miss. And they were 2-3 feet behind the line when they shot. The perimeter defense needs work!
  • If I never, ever see Lucas Johnson again I won't complain. He broke my heart in 2001 when Illinois beat KU in the Midwest Regional semifinal. That still hurts!
  • David Padgett (I keep wanting to say Scott) is the real deal. Good shooter, moves well without the ball, passes well. He's going to be a good one. After this game I'd expect him to start over Graves. He's going to be a force when gets a little bigger.
  • Simien had a slow start but a great finish. He really had his way inside.
  • I didn't see as much of the other freshman as I would have liked. They looked a little intimidated and tentative. Padgett was the only one really ready to play. I think Giddens will be a great player. He's so atheletic. I didn't see enough of Case or Wilkes to form an opinion.
  • Miles was his usual self. A little more aggresive than I remember from last year.
  • Michael Lee was great! Great defense, great 3 point shooting, great ball handing! He just really impressed me. I thought Giddens would take the last starting job. Now I think it will probably be Lee -- at least to start the season.
  • Jeff Hawkins is a great defender. He really got after it. KU went with a three guard line-up a couple times in the second half and really did well.
  • KU under Roy was a finesse team. KU under Self will be a bruiser. I think Simien and Graves are going to be tough inside all year. It'll be nice to watch them push people around. I'm already looking forward to playing Mizzery!

Great article on U.S. troops on R&R
You really should read this article. It will make you feel proud to be an American. It's not the big things you can do to help people. It's the little things.
