The UI's tight, I agree, and being able to free type in direction requests or addresses is nice, too. It's also great how you can type in businesses, like pizza near *your zip code*.
Things they need to do still:
-- Integrate the Phone Book service and maps. I should be able to zip from a person's name to their address in maps.google.com (right now they still link to Yahoo Maps or Mapquest).
-- Allow overlays of popular stops - restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, post offices, etc.
-- Ability to save common addresses (so you don't have to retype them in each time)
Also, it would rock if I could scroll the map using my mouse's wheel.
Just think about it, one day you'll be able to type in, "driving directions to post offices near home" and it will show a map of the place you have saved as "home," nearby postoffices, and the routes and times to get to each one. Google can do it, I know they can! :-)

Hi, I've implemented the posibility to zoom in google maps with the mouse's wheel.
You can check it out at
http://www.panoramio.com/
Source code to do it at
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/Google-Maps-API/browse_thread/thread/373d7fc4c0a40e59/916c10efa38d8a9a?tvc=2&q=mouse+wheel#916c10efa38d8a9a
Also crossing my fingers for google implementing it themselves, as that way it will be available for everybody.
