My Truth
That's what the kidnapped Italian journalist titled her article about her release. This article has a few comments on areas where her truth doesn't seem to match what we know.

"Match what we know".... how do you KNOW these things ? Because that's what a millitary representative said on CNN ? Hey, they KNEW about WMDs too.

A quote from the article :

"Sgrena and the driver said they approached the checkpoint slowly. But "slowly" seems to be a relative term for Italian drivers, and for communists. ". I think that shows the bias in the article, it certainly shows shitty journalism.

Pointing the finger around the place doesn't detract from the fact that it's US soldiers shooting innocent people.

It's kinda like Vietnam, Australian soldiers that returned from Vietnam shell shocked would freak out and jump under tables at the sound of a helicopter. Guess what, only one army had helicopters in Vietnam, and we were meant to be on their side.

"Friendly Fire" seems to be all too common.

Hmm. Well, for my other two reader's information I know Damian. We've argued politics off and on since the US started to liberate Iraq (or as he would say invaded).

Let's see. Sgrena said they were driving slowly. She also said in another article they were driving fast enough to hydroplane and/or fishtail on puddles. So. Which is it?

It is odd the article says that since from what I've read it was an Iraqi driving. My take is that if you're driving fast enough that you can't stop at a military checkpoint you're going too fast.

As for shitty journalism, Sgrena has not hidden her dislike (hatred?) of the US. I wonder how much that has colored her reporting of what happened to her.

She said that 300-400 bullets were fired into her car. However the pictures I've seen have only shown a single bullet hole. Do you think if we spin the car around we'll the other 299-399? Shot at the back of the car? You'd think if that was the case someone would have taken a picture of the back of the car.

Regarding US soldier shooting innocent people ... I think it's horrible what happened. I'm not sure exactly what they expected to happen when they drove up to an American checkpoint and apparently didn't stop. I say apparently because I don't know yet. But I certainly trust my government more than a communist journalist. (Is that an oxymoron? Journalists haven't fared well under communism.) I also know we'll investigate and figure it out. We're investigating Abu Ghraib and convicting people and putting them in prison for what happened there.

I'm not sure what the point of the Vietnam combat comment is. While that's a horrible result of war are you implying that the US intentionally fired on the Australians? Is there any proof to back this up? Could it not be that the sound of helicopters heralded the start of fighting? Oh and according to this (http://www.awm.gov.au/atwar/vietnam.htm) the Australians were flying helicopters in Vietnam.

There have always been incidents of friendly fire in war. I'd argue they are far fewer today than in the past.

The person I really feel for is the Italian agent. He goes out to try to save a fellow Italian and dies as a result. If she had used better judgement and not been kidnapped would he still be alive today? Surely she must share some of the blame. And by paying off the kidnappers are we encouraging them to kidnap again?

Lastly, Sgrena has accused the US of trying to kill her to silence her. I'd like to hear what she has to say that's so damning. If we really wanted to silence her we'd have left her alone completely. The only reason anyone knows her name or cares about her is that she was shot at. Quick name the last two Italian hostages freed -- without using Google.

I don't deny that what happened was horrible. It may have even been negligent. But I'm almost certain it wasn't intentional. I'm open to being proven wrong on that.

Ok, I have more thoughts in my head but dinner with friends call. My next response will be post alcohol after I'm borken.
