Jessie's Footsteps
by Katherine Burke Graziano Jessie Calloway Hale was absorbed in the journey of life and the adventures that waited at every crossroad. Her pioneer roots gave her a strong will, but time interrupted her dream of completing a book . . . Forty years after Jessie died, the author took the first steps toward realizing the dream that eluded her great-grandmother. Concerned with historical accuracy and personal detail, she filled gaps in the fabric of Jessie's story . . . Jessie's Footsteps is a fine tapestry. In these pages, you'll find pioneers and emigrant trails, logging camps and ghost towns, the Donner story and the "California Column," the Wild West and the Great Depression, surprises and mysteries . . . -- from the Foreword
KATHERINE BURKE GRAZIANO, a great-granddaughter of Jessie Hale, was born and raised in California. She majored in English literature at the University of California, Berkeley. After getting Jessie's papers, she pieced together family stories, legal documents, letters, lists, maps, memoirs, news reports, and photos to follow Jessie's Footsteps.
